For eight innings, the bullpen was in control. After everything went wrong with Roy Halladay’s final start, there were plenty of issues with this game in terms of pitching.
Ethan Martin started the game. Luis Garcia, Mike Stutes, Jake Diekman and B.J. Rosenberg all pitched in relief. The five pitchers had combined to hold the Braves to one run on eight hits, walking four and striking out seven. It certainly wasn’t a golden performance, but it was more than enough as the Phillies clawed a few runs across for what appeared to be a comfortable lead.
When the ninth inning rolled around, it turned out to be less than comfortable. If not for a diving stop and great defensive play by Jimmy Rollins, the game may have ended differently. Instead, Rollins’ spectacular play saved the game for the Phillies and Jonathan Papelbon in a 5-4 win over the Braves on Saturday night at Turner Field.
