The final 25 players to make the Opening Day roster has been announced. Ruben Amaro Jr. addressed reporters following the Phillies’ 7-2 win over the Pirates in their final spring game to announce the 25 players that will open the season on the Phillies’ active roster.
The Phillies will start the season with 12 pitchers and 13 position players. There were several last-minute decisions the Phillies needed to make, so we’ll share those first, then close things out with the official roster.
Mike Stutes will not start the season on the DL. He will be a member of the Phillies bullpen, joining Joe Savery and David Herndon as the final additions there. Raul Valdes was sent down, being in a battle for the final spot with Savery. Pitchers Jose Contreras and Justin De Fratus will start the season on the DL for the Phillies.
Freddy Galvis was a given on the Phillies’ roster, but the Phillies will also give an infield position to Pete Orr. Hector Luna and Scott Podsednik have been sent down to Triple-A after losing the final roster spot. Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Michael Martinez will all start the season on the DL. Utley will be rehabbing in Arizona until the Phillies’ west coast trip, which runs from April 16 to April 25.
Here is the final roster by position. You can also see the current 25-man roster in the roster tab under the 2012 Phillies tab.
