A couple of miscues and a lack of command on the mound cost the Phillies in Friday’s series opener against the Nationals. But the series can be evened with the help of a rookie pitcher.

The Phillies (23-25) are looking to pull back to within a game of the .500 mark while the Nationals (25-23) can create further separation on the Phils.

Jonathan Pettibone (3-0, 3.00 ERA) gets the start for the Phillies. Pettibone pitched a career-long in his last start, going seven innings and allowing two runs to the Reds, taking a no-decision. Pettibone is making his first career start against the Nationals and in Nationals Park.

The Phillies will face right-hander Dan Haren (4-5, 5.54 ERA). Haren is coming off his worst start of the season where he allowed seven runs in five innings to the Padres. Haren did not face the Phillies in 2012 and is 0-3 with a 6.14 ERA against them in his career. At Nationals Park, he is 3-2 with a 4.50 ERA.

Game notes and lineups are available after the jump.

There is only one division foe the Phillies have not faced as of yet. That team is the Washington Nationals.

Coming off a series win against the Marlins to open an eight-game road trip, the Phillies (23-24) have a chance to return to .500. To do that, they need to win the series opener against the Nationals (24-23).

Kyle Kendrick (4-2, 2.82 ERA) will start for the Phillies. Kendrick suffered the loss in his last start, a 10-0 Phillies’ loss to the Reds, despite allowing only four of the runs in seven innings. Kendrick was 2-2 against the Nationals with a 2.89 ERA in 2012. In his career against the Nationals, Kendrick is 4-5 with a 4.68 ERA. At Nationals Park, he is 2-1 with a 4.36 ERA.

The Phillies will face right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (7-2, 1.62 ERA). Zimmermann lost his last start to the Padres, allowing only two runs – one earned – in eight innings. Zimmemann was 1-2 with a 3.71 ERA against the Phillies in 2012. In his career against the Phillies, Zimmermann is 1-4 with a 5.06 ERA. At Nationals Park, Zimmermann is 16-13 with a 3.46 ERA.

Game notes and lineups are available after the jump.

After erasing embarrassment with a formidable 7-3 win over the Marlins on Tuesday night, the Phillies have a chance to pull into a tie for second place in the NL East.

The Phillies (22-24) would need some help from the Nationals for that to happen, but the first step to that is a win which would also claim the series from the Marlins (13-33).

Cliff Lee (4-2, 2.83 ERA) gets the start for the Phillies. Lee allowed two runs in seven innings in taking a no-decision in his last start against the Reds. Lee has yet to face the Marlins in 2013. He went 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA against the Marlins in 2012. In his career against the Marlins, Lee is 3-1 with a 2.68 ERA. At Marlins Park, he is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA.

The Phillies will face right-hander Kevin Slowey (1-4, 3.44 ERA). Slowey lost his last start against the Diamondbacks, allowing six runs on seven hits in three innings. He picked up his only win of the season against the Phillies, pitching seven shutout innings on May 5 in the Marlins’ 14-2 win. In his career against the Phillies, Slowey is 1-0 with a 5.14 ERA. At Marlins Park, he is 0-2 with a 3.99 ERA.

There is no other word for it. Losing for the fourth time in games against the Marlins is downright embarrassing. Not to mention this lowly team can boast three straight wins against the Phillies.

Now, the Marlins (13-32) send a promising young arm to the mound with a chance to claim the series while the Phillies (21-24) turn to a rookie of their own.

Tyler Cloyd (0-0, 2.84 ERA) gets the start for the Phillies. Cloyd’s only start in the majors this season came against the Diamondbacks. He allowed two runs on two hits in 6 1/3 innings as the Phillies would eventually lose to the D’Backs, 3-2. Cloyd is making his first career start against the Marlins and at Marlins Park.

The Phillies will face right-hander Jose Fernandez (2-2, 3.48 ERA). Fernandez took a no-decision in his last start, allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings to the Reds. Fernandez has faced the Phillies twice this season, including getting his first major-league win in his last start, allowing just one hit in seven shutout innings. At Marlins Park, Fernandez is 0-0 with a 2.12 ERA.

Game notes and lineups are available after the jump.

After two big swings by Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis turned another disappointing and frustrating game into an exciting win, the Phillies head to Miami to face the lowly Marlins.

The Marlins (12-32) just gutted out an emotional win themselves, holding off the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. They also had the Phillies’ number in the final two games of a four-game series in Philadelphia in early May after the Phillies (21-23) appeared to be well on their way to a sweep.

Cole Hamels (1-6, 4.61 ERA) gets the start for the Phillies in the opener. Hamels lost his last start against the Indians, allowing five runs in five innings. Hamels faced the Marlins twice this season. He allowed two runs on four hits in eight innings in his last start against the Marlins, taking the loss as the Phillies fell, 2-0. In his career against the Marlins, Hamels is 8-11 with a 3.24 ERA. At Marlins Park, Hamels is 2-1 with a 1.55 ERA.

The Phillies will face right-hander Alex Sanabia (2-6, 5.00 ERA). Sanabia lost his last start, allowing four runs in six innings to the Reds. Sanabia faced the Phillies on May 2, allowing four runs – two earned – in five innings and suffering the loss. In his career against the Phillies, Sanabia is 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA. At Marlins Park, he is 1-3 with a 5.70 ERA.

Game notes and lineups are available after the jump.

The homestand, which will wrap on Sunday afternoon, featured five games. Two of them have been strong showings by the Phillies. The other two have been total embarrassments.

So in the series finale on Sunday, fresh off a 10-0 shutout win, the baby of the rotation will face a beast of the National League as the Phillies (20-23) close out the season series with the Reds (26-17).

Jonathan Pettibone (3-0, 3.41 ERA) gets the start for the Phillies. Pettibone allowed two runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings in his last start against the Indians, picking up the win. Pettibone is making his first start against the Reds and sixth career start. At Citizens Bank Park, Pettibone is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA.

The Phillies will face right-hander Homer Bailey (2-3, 3.51 ERA). Bailey allowed two runs on six hits in a complete-game win against the Marlins in his last start. Bailey pitched eight shutout innings allowing two hits against the Phillies on April 16. Bailey is 0-3 with a 4.24 ERA in his career against the Phillies. At Citizens Bank Park, he is 0-2 with a 5.92 ERA.

A little drama highlighted the Phillies 5-3 win over the Reds on Friday. The series against the Reds has started the same way the series against the Indians did: with a win.

But the Phillies flopped in the series finale against the Indians on Wednesday. Saturday marks the second of three games against the Reds.

The Phillies (20-22) attempt to creep to within a game of the .500 mark against the Reds (25-17).

Kyle Kendrick (4-1, 2.47 ERA) gets the start for the Phillies. Kendrick took a no-decision in the Phillies’ 4-2 win over the D’Backs on Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits in seven hits. Kendrick faced the Reds on April 16, pitching seven shutout innings allowing two hits. In his career against the Reds, Kendrick is 3-2 with a 4.19 ERA. At Citizens Bank Park, he is 29-26 with a 4.34 ERA.

The Phillies will face right-hander Bronson Arroyo (3-4, 3.76 ERA). Arroyo shut out the Brewers through 6 2/3 innings in getting the win. Arroyo faced the Phillies on April 15, allowing two runs in eight innings and getting the win. Arroyo is 3-7 with a 6.00 ERA in his career against the Phillies. At Citizens Bank Park, he is 1-2 with a 9.60 ERA.

Game notes and lineups are available after the jump.

After another series split, this time in two games with the Indians, the Phillies close out the homestand against more stiff competition.

It was a week and a half ago that the Phillies traveled to San Francisco fresh off a loss having to face a red-hot Giants team, currently on a six-game winning streak. The Phillies took two of three games in the series.

The Phillies (19-22) are facing the Cincinnati Reds (25-16) also currently on a six-game winning streak. They will bid for a similar result this weekend.

Cliff Lee (4-2, 2.86 ERA) will start for the Phillies. Lee pitched seven shutout innings allowing just three hits against the D’Backs in a 3-1 win on Saturday. Lee allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings in a no-decision against the Reds on April 15. The Phillies would go on to lose that game 4-2. In his career against the Reds, Lee is 6-2 with a 3.79 ERA. At Citizens Bank Park, he is 17-12 with a 2.72 ERA.

The Phillies will face Tony Cingrani (2-0, 2.89 ERA). Cingrani allowed two runs in four innings in his last start against the Brewers. Cingrani is making his first career start against the Phillies and at Citizens Bank Park. Cingrani appeared in three games as a reliever in 2012 and has made five starts this season.

Game notes and lineups are available after the jump.

Cole Hamels has received exactly 10 runs of support in his last six starts. Up until his start in San Francisco a little over a week ago, so had Cliff Lee. Lee has received nine runs of support since. Perhaps it’s finally Hamels’ turn.

The Phillies (19-21) are coming off a strong 6-2 win over the Indians (21-17) led by Jonathan Pettibone and John Mayberry Jr. Pettibone has certainly looked like a fit in the rotation. He is 3-0. Hamels, the ace of the staff, is 1-5. Strange game, this baseball.

Hamels (1-5, 4.18 ERA) starts for the Phillies. Hamels lost his start against the D’Backs despite allowing two runs in six innings of work. Hamels did not face the Indians in 2012, but has faced them once in his career, allowing six runs in five innings in a 2007 start. Hamels is also a career 48-35 with a 3.26 ERA at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies will face right-hander Corey Kluber (2-2, 5.64 ERA). Kluber suffered the loss in his last start against the Tigers, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in four innings. Kluber is making his first appearance against the Phillies and in Citizens Bank Park. Since starting the season as a reliever, he is 1-2 as a start with two losses in May.

Game notes and lineups are available after the jump.

With a day off to catch your breath from some crazy Sunday heroics in Arizona, the Phillies are back on Tuesday. For the third time this season, and second at Citizens Bank Park, it is time for interleague play.

The Cleveland Indians (21-16) return to Philadelphia for the first time since 2010 when they were swept by the Phillies in a three-game series. The Phillies (18-21) were swept by the Indians in a two-games series to close out April and open May.

Jonathan Pettibone (2-0, 3.63 ERA) will start for the Phillies. Pettibone pitched well in his last start against the Giants, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He was dangerously close to suffering his first loss in the majors before a two-run ninth-inning rally gave him a no-decision. Pettibone is making his fifth career start and first against the Indians. It is his third at Citizens Bank Park, where he is 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA.

The Phillies will face left-hander Scott Kazmir (2-1, 4.87 ERA). Kazmir picked up the win in his last start against the Athletics, allowing one run on five hits in six innings. Kazmir did not pitch in the majors in 2012, and his last start in Philadelphia was Game 5 of the 2008 World Series. In his career against the Phillies, Kazmir is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA. Kazmir has made just one regular-season start in Philadelphia, allowing two runs in five innings.

Game notes and lineups are available after the jump.
